Beasts honor fallen officer The final score was 7 6 in favor of the women team in the annual Beauty the Beast fast pitch charity softball contest at Braden Field in Greenbelt on Friday. Proceeds for this year game were donated to the family of Prince George County Police Sgt. Steve Gaughan, who was killed in the line of duty on June 21. One of the FOP members who knew Gaughan well was John Van Dress, now a captain after nearly 16 years on patrol in Seat Pleasant. Van Dress had been so close to Gaughan that the two families celebrated their children birthdays and had spent Father Day together. Gaughan was killed two days later. just had so much personality, Van Dress said. was always trying to play practical jokes on one of us. Having a game like this with a turnout like we had really means a lot to me and the other officers. Jeff Schreiber scored on a fielder choice grounder by Jerry Potts. But with one out and the bases loaded, Gall struck out Lenny Sage swinging then got Tom Keifline looking to end the inning. After going scoreless against Cory Karcesky for three innings, the Beasts scored three runs in the fourth against southpaw Jill Holts. Rita Horning, who singled to start the inning, scored on a wild pitch, Beth Radford walked and later scored on an error and Lauren Hebb, the league most valuable player, reached on one error and scored on another. Beasts southpaw Joy Mascetti took a 3 1 lead into the sixth but was promptly undone by several fielding errors and the Beauties scored five unearned runs on four hits. John Mahoney, Billy Norris, Chuck Richardson, Ray Rock and Potts scored. An RBI grounder by Horning scored Bender in the eighth with the go ahead run. Although organizers did not charge admission, FOP second vice president Donnie Bell noted that most fans made donations and nearly 300 commemorative T shirts with Gaughan badge number on the left chest were sold. The proceeds went to the Gaughan family.
